It’s the oldest Italian national park (1961)
and occupies the entire eastern side of the Rhêmes Valley.
Numerous animals live in the park:
ibexes, chamois, marmots, foxes, ermines, squirrels,
partridges, woodpeckers, rare eagles and bearded vultures.
The flora is also of great importance: edelweiss, martagon lilies, rhododendrons, lichens, larch, fir and pine woods.
The western side is largely protected,
because of presence of the private hunting reserve.
